Shinkansen 700 Series with Duck Bill Nose



 
Shinkansen N700 series was developed with the nose have the “duck bill” design, it is intended to reduce the impact of boom noise when Shinkansen entering the tunnel. If Shinkansen  enter into the tunnel at speeds above 200 km / h, then at the other end of the tunnel will occur deafening sound termed “boom noise”. This phenomenon occurs very extreme in the previous Shinkansen series that have the conventional nose.

This phenomenon occurs as a hand pump tube driven by the pump valve, so that at the end of the tube there is a high air pressure and causing the boom noise. The longer the tunnel, the higher the sir pressure that will occurs. Shinkansen 700 series with a duck bill nose design, visually appear to be less good, but in terms of technology turns with such a design can reduce boom noise almost half if compared with conventional nose design.

The technology of “duck bill” nose not only  reducing the phenomenon of boom noise but also noise pollution, and found to reduce power and energy consumption that used by Shinkansen when entering the tunnel. Shinkansen is more efficient and energy saving, because the duck bill nose can reduce air resistance. The other advantage  by reduce air pressure in the tunnel also reduces vibration that may result in a lifetime of components of Shinkansen.

Shinkansen with duck bill nose design is the result of research on wind tunnel and the experiment that was also performed by using a mini model of the Shinkansen, which is monitored by sensors and computer simulators. And then it turns out duck bill nose design is superior compared to conventional design and bullets, especially at the time of entering the tunnel.
